Cinema Circle
a movie night and discussion
RopeMarks
The Evolution of Performances
Monday, May 4, 9th 2026, 7-10pm
Rope photographs can be incredibly moving, enlightening and inspiring but having the chance to view, hear and feel the energy through cinematic film takes one to a deeper level of understanding and appreciation.
Cinema Circle is a regular movie night where attendees will have an opportunity to view a film as if glimpsing into a rope scene in a private studio or rope performance in front of an audience. After watching the film, we will have a group discussion to understand and elaborate on each person’s perspectives.
Rigger: RopeMarks
For this month’s Cinema Circle, we’ll be showing multiple performances from the same artist–RopeMarks. His work reflects traditional Japanese kinbaku techniques, but is vastly complemented with his own distinct and unique style. His performances are known for a dynamic and high-energy pace that draws the audience in.
Join us to discuss his unique style as we watch performances of RopeMarks with Dutch Dame, from the 2013 London Festival of the Art of Japanese Rope Bondage, and the 2016 Ellipsis Rope Event. Not only do these performances tell two different stories, but one demonstrates a unique point-of-view from the rigger’s perspective.
About the Artist
RopeMarks, the professional name of Bob Roos, is an Amsterdam-based specialist in Japanese rope bondage, also known as shibari or kinbaku. Since 1999, he has studied and practiced this art form professionally, dedicating nearly three decades to its refinement and development.
Over the course of his career, he trained in Japan under the lineage of the late Akechi Denki (明智伝鬼) and Naka Akira (奈加あきら), two of the most influential nawashi of their generation. His work is grounded in the traditional techniques and philosophy transmitted through this lineage, while clearly shaped by his own distinct and evolving style.
Recognized as the leading Dutch specialist in Japanese rope bondage, RopeMarks has built a strong international reputation within the global kinbaku community. He has taught extensively around the world, including throughout Europe, the United States, Russia, and Japan.
Under the name RopeMarks Ryū, he offers hands-on courses, workshops, and private lessons that combine technical precision with presence, connection, and experiential depth. His work reflects both respect for tradition and a commitment to personal expression within the art of Japanese rope bondage.
