FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Bound Lark is a rope space built through care, communication, curiosity, and shared responsibility. The information below answers many of the common questions we receive about events, accessibility, privacy, expectations, safety, and community resources.

We encourage all attendees to review our Code of Conduct, Terms and Policies, and related community guidelines before attending events. If you still have questions after reading through the FAQ, please feel free to reach out.

  • When is the studio open?

Bound Lark is currently only open during scheduled events, classes, workshops, and rentals. We intentionally build our programming over time with care for sustainability, accessibility, and community reads, rather than rushing toward a fixed schedule

You can view upcoming offerings on our calendar page.

What kind of events does Bound Lark offer?

Our programming includes rope jams, rope labs, workshops, intensives, discussion spaces, social gatherings, performance-focused events, and community-centered offerings. Some events are highly educational or technique-focused, while others are more social, exploratory, or practice-oriented. For more details, see what we offer.

What is the parking like at the venue?

There is typically street parking available within a 1-5 minute walking distance of the venue. Please do not park in the lot directly in front of the building unless you have an authorized permit, as unauthorized vehicles may be towed.

Is there space to store personal belongings

Yes. There is a closet at the entrance for storing shoes, coats, and personal belongings during events. Please note that the studio does not currently have secured storage, and attendees are responsible for their own belongings.

Are there restrooms available within the venue?

Yes. There is one restroom available for attendees within the studio space.

A second restroom is reserved for presenters and staff.

I have sent a message but have not heard back? Are you there?

Thank you for your patience. Everyone involved in running and maintaining Bound Lark contributes to the space alongside their own work, family, health, and life responsibilities. We do our best to respond thoughtfully and as promptly as possible.

  • Do I need to use my real/legal name when I sign up for an event?

Yes. Legal names are required for waivers, agreements (Code of Conduct, Terms and Conditions), and administrative purposes related to attending in-person events.

We understand the importance of privacy and confidentiality within kink and rope spaces and handle this information with care.

Is there video surveillance in the studio??

There is a camera positioned at the entrance of the studio that records individuals entering and exiting the venue for safety and legal purposes. Access to recordings is limited and only used when necessary for security or incident-related concerns. Your privacy and confidentiality is of utmost importance to us, as well as your safety.

Can I share the studio address or event information with someone else? Even if they say they are attending?

No. Please do not share the studio address, event details, Zoom links, or other access information with anyone unless they have been specifically vetted by the studio team.

All attendees are required to complete the vetting process individually before attending events at Bound Lark. Being invited by, accompanying, or known by another attendee does not replace this requirement.

If someone is interested in attending, please encourage them to contact us directly.

Are photos or videos allowed during events?

Photography and video policies may vary depending on the event. In general, we ask attendees to prioritize privacy, discretion, and consent at all times.

Do not photograph, record, or post identifiable images of others without their explicit permission.

Please also be mindful of phone usage during events so that the space remains present, intentional, and minimally disruptive for others.

What community expectations exist at Bound Lark?

All attendees are expected to abide by our Code of conduct, Terms and Policies, and any event-specific expectations.

We also encourage attendees, presenters, facilitators, and community members in positions of influence to review our Guidelines for Positions of Influence, which outline our values around consent, pacing, transparency, and power dynamics within community spaces.

We believe healthy communities are built through accountability, communication, mutual care, and thoughtful discernment.

  • What amenities are there in the studio?

The studio includes a fully-equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, gas stove, gas oven, cookware, dishes, and utensils available for attendee use. Please note that food and liquids should be avoided in the tying area to avoid spillage.

We also typically have bottled water, flavored water, coffee, tea, soda, and other beverages available for a small suggested donation.

Can I bring food/drink to the venue?

Yes! Food and drink are welcome within the kitchen and dining areas.

Please use discretion when bringing food or liquids into rope or tying areas to help protect and maintain the space.  If you use dishes, cookware, or shared spaces, please help clean up afterward so the space remains welcoming for everyone.

What is the studio’s alcohol and tobacco policy?

Alcohol is permitted within the studio, though it is not provided. Attendees are expected to consume responsibly and remain mindful of their own capacity, awareness, and participation within the space.

The venue is smoke-free. Smoking is only permitted outside the venue in designated areas. The management of the property has voted for the entire property to be smoke-free, however the date of enactment is to be determined.

    Is the venue wheelchair-accessible?

Unfortunately, no. The studio is located on the ground level of an older building that includes stairs and does not have an elevator. There are several steps from the entrance of the building to the door of the Studio. If you have accessibility questions or accommodation needs, please contact us ahead of time and we will do our best to discuss available options.

  • What should I wear to an event?

You are encouraged to dress in a way that supports your comfort, expression, and participation within the event environment. For workshops and classes, attendees often wear athleisure wear that is easy to move around in.

Please remember that outside the studio doors, attendees must remain legally dressed and mindful of the surrounding neighborhood.

There is a bathroom available for changing if you would prefer additional privacy.

Can I purchase a ticket at the door?

No. All tickets must be purchased in advance through our registration system. Because the studio is intentionally small and events are often capacity-limited, advance registration helps us maintain a safe and sustainable environment for attendees and presenters alike.

The event I am interested in is sold out. Is there a waiting list?

Some events maintain waitlists while others do not. If you are interested in attending a sold out event, please contact us and we will let you know whether a waitlist is available.

    How are payments handled?

Tickets are currently processed through Square and are prepaid before the event.

Rentals are handled through invoicing and may support multiple payment methods.

    What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation and refund timelines vary depending on the type of event. Unless otherwise stated on the event page:

    • Weekday events (Mon-Thu) generally become non-refundable 72 hours before the event

    • Weekday workshops/classes generally become non-refundable one week before the event

    • Weekend events generally follow a two-week cancellation window, however the cancellation policy is dependent on the event.

If you need to cancel, please contact us directly.

Attendance at all events requires completion of the betting process. For regular events, if an individual has not completed vetting and we are unable to complete the process at least 72 hours before the event, the ticket may be cancelled and refunded. For workshops, classes, and intensives, if an individual has not completed vetting and we are unable to complete the process at least one week before the event, the ticket may be cancelled and refunded.

Can I rent the space for personal use / a private party / a photography session?

Possibly. We occasionally offer rentals for private practice, photography sessions, small gatherings, or other aligned uses of the space. Rental requests are reviewed individually based on availability, fit, and logistics. Rates vary between weekdays and weekends. Please contact us if you are interested in discussing a rental.

  • Do I need to bring my own rope?

While the studio does maintain some spare rope, attendees participating in classes, workshops, or regular rope practice are generally encouraged to bring their own rope kit.

    How many rigs are available?

The studio currently has five attendee bamboo hardpoints and one presenter/teaching bamboo hardpoint that may also be used as an attendee rig during classes. However, the studio structure is able to accommodate a variety of hardpoint styles and attachment methods. Attendees are welcome to bring and use their own hardpoints, hardware, or suspension equipment as long as it is used safely and responsibly. If you are unsure whether a setup or attachment method is appropriate for the space, please ask. We also have the ability to raise or lower the bamboo hardpoints as needed.

I know a few things about rope, can I teach at your studio?

We are always open to conversations with thoughtful educators, facilitators, and community contributors.

All presenters and facilitators are expected to uphold the studio’s Code of Conduct, community expectations, and standards around consent, ethics, safety, and professionalism.

We value not only technical skill, but also communication, self-awareness, accountability, and the ability to foster sustainable learning environments.

Can I observe people tying or ask questions during events?

    Often yes, but context matters.

Please be mindful that rope can involve focus, vulnerability, emotional intensity, or complex communication. Always ask before interrupting, observing closely, touching equipment, or entering someone’s tying space.

Respecting attention and consent helps maintain a safer and more intentional environment for everyone.

  • What is your Illness Policy?

If you are feeling sick, experiencing symptoms of illness, have knowingly been exposed to a contagious illness, or have recently tested positive for COVID, flu, or similar illnesses, please do not attend events.

Please contact us before the event and we will discuss available options.

If you test positive shortly after attending an event, we ask that you notify us so we can appropriately inform potentially affected attendees.

Masks are welcome within the space.

    How does vetting work?

Bound Lark uses a vetting process intended to support community safety, informed participation, and shared expectations within the space.

This process begins with completing our online vetting form, and may then include conversations, references,  a face-to-face video call, cross-checking available community safety resources,or other context-dependent considerations. We are a supporting member of NCSF and may cross-check available reports through NCSF and publicly available sex offender registries as part of this process.

All attendees are required to complete the vetting process before attending events at the studio. Being invited by, accompanying, or known by another attendee does not replace this requirement.

Because vetting often involves coordinating schedules, contacting references, and allowing time for thoughtful review, the process may take approximately 1 to 4 weeks depending on responsiveness and availability.

If you have not yet been vetted, we strongly encourage you to complete the process before purchasing a ticket. For regular events, if we are unable to complete your vetting at least 72 hours before the event, your ticket may be cancelled and refunded.

For workshops, classes, and intensives, if we are unable to complete your vetting at least one week before the event, your ticket may be cancelled and refunded.

Please go to this form for more information and fill it out if you would like to be vetted.

How do I help maintain safety in the space?

We believe that safety is a shared responsibility.

We encourage attendees to approach the space pro-actively with communication, self-awareness, respect for boundaries, and care for the people around them.

If you experience or witness concerning behavior, boundary violations, or safety issues, we encourage you to speak with staff and/or review our incident reporting resources.

  • What is the incident reporting process for?

Our incident reporting process exists to provide our community members with a structured way to communicate concerns related to consent, safety, harm, or the overall well-being of the space. The detailed process can be found here and outlines how reports are received, reviewed, and followed up on so that people have greater clarity about what to expect.

When should I submit an incident report?

Reports may be submitted regarding experiences, behaviors, or patterns that impact safety, trust, or community well-being. While we are primarily concerned about incidents occurring within Bound Lark spaces/events, we may also consider external concerns that could meaningfully affect community safety.

Can I talk to someone before deciding to report?

Yes. If you are uncertain whether reporting feels right, you are welcome to reach out for a private conversation first . We can help clarify options, discuss resources, and support you in determining what next steps feel appropriate.

    Are incident reports confidential?

Reports are handled as privately as possible. Information is shared only on a need-to-know basis, or when necessary to address immediate concerns related to safety or legal obligations. A third party is only involved if there is a conflict of interest. Anonymous reports are always welcome, though they may limit the actions we are able to take.

Are there resources for mediation or conflict resolution?

Bound Lark does not currently provide formal mediation services directly. However, we maintain and continue building a list of local community and national resources related to communication support, restorative approaches, accountability work, and conflict resolution.
