Our Approach to Vetting Presenters
The founders of Bound Lark Rope Studio have a firm belief in a thorough vetting process for each and every presenter we allow into our space. The design and execution of our process is not limited by what is described in this document. As a rope studio, we continually refine and adjust our process in order to best serve our community as a supportive space for all those desiring to explore/teach rope and/or rope-related activities.
This process falls directly in line with our Vision and Mission Statement:
“Nurture and grow a healthy community of respectful rope enthusiasts
Share knowledge and foster an open and supportive learning environment
Promote and nurture individual, interpersonal and collective growth”
As such, we specifically vet potential presenter(s) for any future workshop, intensive, presentation and/or performance before any commitments are made. The following is not an all-inclusive list but is the core process of vetting every potential presenter:
Does the presenter have a history of violations?
Review and verify any reports made with NCSF (National Coalition of Sexual Freedom) regarding the presenter
Review and verify any posts made on the Rope Bottoms Share Group that includes the presenter
Speak with trusted sources in the community, such as KPNG (Kink Producers Network Group) who the potential presenter may know and/or have had interactions with to determine if the community is aware of any past violations
Review and verify any posts made on social media (Instagram, Fetlife, X(twitter), etc.) about the presenter, citing violations.
If any source reveals a history of violations committed by the potential presenter, further research is required:
Work with all sources to verify if an accountability process has been started and what status the presenter has within the process, if it has been established
Reach out to the potential presenter to notify them that we have found and/or heard of past violations and a transparent and honest conversation is conducted
Reach out to any persons involved in the violation and obtaining consent to speaking with us for an honest conversation regarding these incidents If the potential presenter has ever presented, taught, or interacted within any known rope studio or kink venue, contact each location to gain further insight into the potential presenter If the presenter has had any private students and/or partners, reach out to each if they consent to speaking to us regarding any past incidents and the general behavior/demeanor/teaching style of the potential presenter
Once all information is gathered and any follow-up discussions are completed, a decision is made by the owners of BLRS as to, if the person in question is a good fit for the studio as a presenter, as an attendee, as an observer or is not welcome into the studio. The research conducted during the vetting process is not exhaustive nor is our process perfect. We understand that not all parties are willing to speak about their experience but we make every effort to gather as much information available to us in order to make a well-rounded thoughtful decision.
Decision Point
These decisions are not made lightly nor do we serve as mediators between parties where harm/trauma has occurred. We do stand by our decision, as it is backed by a robust vetting/information-gathering process. All information gathered during this process is strictly private and will never be shared by anyone outside of the parties involved and/or those who consented to speaking with us regarding the potential presenter. While we encourage, we do not insist or require anyone to seek reparation but we understand people have their own processes and reasons behind it.
To that end, when we decide a potential presenter is a good fit to present at BLRS, we stand firmly behind our decision in support of them and their future with BLRS as educators/presenters in the rope community. We back this decision up through our vetting process, utilizing the information gathered from sources as described above. We also seek out those individuals who have interacted and/or been a part of the potential presenter’s rope journey including as a student and ask for testimonials if they are willing to voice their support.
Restorative Actions and Re-Integration
In addition, the founders of Bound Lark Rope Studio believe in the restorative actions of individuals who have committed behaviors that have negatively impacted those within the greater rope/kink community. We, as active members in the rope/kink community, fully understand and are committed to supporting any individual who has experienced trauma or harm. We also acknowledge presenters have a platform. This platform coupled with a presenter’s level of experience and expertise gives them an inherent position of power. While we do not support nor condone behavior that leads to trauma/harm, we do support and believe in individuals who have and/or are willing to go through an honest and corrective accountability process. We believe every person in the rope community as well as the larger kink community has the opportunity to offer something as a way of giving back and thereby, furthering the community, if they choose to do so in a healthy, communicative and honest way.
In Summary
Considering all information outlined above, our pursuit for perfection is futile. We understand and acknowledge that not everyone will understand or support the decisions we make. We do not assume our process is thorough enough to rule out any potential issue with a future presenter. We do, however, believe in our community and in continuing to foster growth through safe and thoughtful education. We will always support and give voice to any individual who has experienced harm/trauma. We will always strive to support any individual who may have a history, if all of the pieces are in place for us to feel confident the individual will be safe, honest and open with us, with our attendees and within our community. We are extremely grateful for the love and support we have received and for every presenter that has walked through our doors with a desire to educate those within our community. We hope to continue furthering rope education with future presenters as we promote and nurture individual, interpersonal and collective growth.
