The Rope Bottoming Workshop

This workshop aims to help rope bottoms develop a deeper understanding of what happens to our bodies and minds when we are in rope. Together, we’ll explore the physiology and psychology of the rope experience, examine our personal motivations for engaging in rope, and develop practical tools for communicating our needs, experiences, and boundaries with partners.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a richer understanding of how rope can evoke physical sensations, emotional states, and internal narratives, and the many ways you can recognize, communicate, and integrate those experiences both in and out of rope.

This bottoms-focused workshop is open to participants of all skill levels. While the material is designed with rope bottoms in mind, tops are warmly invited to attend to deepen their understanding of the bottoming experience and strengthen communication with their partners. No partner is required.

Partners will receive a rope journal designed to support reflection, note-taking, and personal insight throughout the workshop. The workshop also offers optional grounding and fidget-friendly engagement for participants who benefit from having something to do with their hands while learning.

AM Session - Physiology & Psychology

10 AM - 1 PM

In this session, we’ll focus on the physical and emotional processes that shape our experience in rope. We’ll begin by exploring what happens physiologically when we are tied:

  • Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)

  • Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)

  • Hormonal responses

  • Amygdala activation

  • Prefrontal cortex regulation

We’ll then consider how the body interprets these physical inputs and turns them into emotional experiences. We will also discuss Bessel van der Kolk’s concept that “the body remembers” even when our conscious mind does not, and how this embodied memory can influence our reactions and feelings during rope.

This session concludes with a panel of experienced rope bottoms active in the DMV community. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, hear diverse perspectives, and learn practical tips from bottoms with a wide range of lived experiences.

PM Session - Intention & Communication

2 PM - 5 PM

In the afternoon, we shift gears to examine intention—the reasons we are drawn to rope—and the many ways we communicate within a scene. While you don’t need a defined intention to enjoy rope bondage, understanding your “why” can help guide you in choosing partners, honoring your limits and desires, relaxing into the experience, and staying safe.

We’ll also explore the wide spectrum of communication signals exchanged between bottoms and tops. Some are direct—such as using your voice—while others are more subtle: changes in breathing, body tension, or the way you respond to shifts in rope.

We will close with a conversation on trust: trusting yourself, trusting your rigger, and trusting your community.

Intention is your compass; communication is the map; trust is the foundation.

Presenter Bio: BrigidBights

Brigid is a dedicated rope bottom who has embraced nearly every facet of rope with enthusiasm. Since joining the rope community in September 2024, she has completed four weekend intensive trainings, tied with more than a dozen riggers across the DMV and NC regions, and built meaningful connections within the community. Although new to the scene, rope has become a source of peace, strength, and resilience for her. She is particularly drawn to the endurance it invites, the deep interpersonal connection it fosters, and the creative, narrative-driven possibilities it opens. As an emerging kink educator, Brigid integrates her lived experience as a rope bottom with her professional background as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Through this course, she combines personal practice, clinical expertise, and thorough research to provide high-quality, clearly presented, and accessible education.
